The results are in from Google’s “Mobilegeddon,” the algorithm designed to make for a more mobile-friendly Google search experience:
8,698 non-responsive (non-mobile friendly) websites dropped in search rankings
4,521 responsive (mobile friendly) websites rose in search rankings.
What does this mean for the business owner?
It depends. If you have a non-mobile friendly website that brought in few leads initially, it will probably start bringing in even fewer. For example, if your non-mobile site was on page 5 for a standard keyword search, it is likely to be much further down for the same search.
What are the types of mobile websites?
There are 3 types of mobile websites, two of which are quickly becoming obsolete forms of mobility.
-Mobile 1: Separate HTML coding and separate URL for computer searches and mobile searches. Twice the cost, twice the upkeep. These sites will rank low with Google’s mobile algorithms.
-Mobile 2: Separate HTML, with the same URL for computer and mobile searches. Anyone searching will not have to use a different URL from a mobile device, but the site will still rank low.
-Responsive: Single website that is coded and designed to automatically adapt to any screen. These are the only sites we design at Sprout, and they will not drop in rankings with Google’s new algorithms.
As Google continues to refine its mobile search algorithms, more updates that promote mobile-friendly search results are anticipated. If you have a responsive website, things can only get better for you.
